In a Pickle: TikTok Trend Sparks Iceland's Cucumber Shortage

A TikTok trend has turned Iceland’s cucumber market upside down, leading to a nationwide shortage that has caught both consumers and supermarkets off guard. The unexpected spike in demand has led to empty shelves and emergency imports from the Netherlands.

The craze began with Canada-based TikToker Logan Moffitt, also known as “cucumber guy,” whose cucumber salad recipes have gone viral. Moffitt's daily posts, featuring creative ways to prepare cucumbers, have captivated millions, leading to an unprecedented demand in Iceland. The hashtag #Cucumber has seen millions of posts, with Icelanders chopping, pickling, and consuming cucumbers like never before.

Major grocery chains like Kronan and Hagkaup have reported a surge in cucumber sales, with Kronan even arranging for an emergency shipment to meet the demand. The Horticulturists’ Sales Company (SFG), representing Icelandic farmers, noted that the country’s greenhouse-grown cucumbers couldn’t keep up with the sudden popularity.

Adding to the chaos, ingredients associated with the viral recipes, such as sesame oil and rice vinegar, are also flying off the shelves, with some stores reporting complete sellouts.

While Iceland is known for its self-sustaining agriculture, the country is grappling with this unusual shortage, exacerbated by the timing of the viral trend. With the island’s reliance on geothermal-powered greenhouses, any supply disruptions pose significant challenges, leading to costly imports to bridge the gap.

Hagkaup confirmed that while TikTok played a significant role, Icelandic cucumber shortages are not uncommon this time of year, adding another layer to the ongoing veggie conundrum.
