Windsor Castle Hosts its First Open Iftar

The UK royal family hosted the first open iftar at Windsor Castle, the first in the State Apartments' 1,000-year history.

Over 360 guests broke their fast on Sunday, Mar. 2, at the castle's St. George's Hall.

People of all faiths and backgrounds were invited to the event, which is part of the Royal Collection's initiative to ensure that the castles are enjoyed by everyone.

The UK charity, the Ramadan Tent Project, organized the event. The iftar was the first event to celebrate Ramadan in the State Apartments. Windsor Castle was built in the 14th century during the reign of King Edward III.

Eighteen major venues across the UK have been confirmed to host open iftars during Ramadan, which include the Victoria and Albert Museum, Shakespeare’s Globe theatre, Lord’s Cricket Ground, Cardiff City Stadium, Villa Park, and Trafalgar Square.
