Paris 2024: Algerian Withdraws from Match Against Israeli

The Algerian judoka Redouane Messaoud Dris withdrew from a match against an Israeli opponent Tohar Butbul at the Paris Olympics 2024.

The International Judo Federation announced on Sunday, Jul. 28 that Butbul will advance in the tournament by walkover.

Dris was disqualified after missing the scheduled weigh-in a day before his match in the 73-kg division against Butbul.

This is the second time an Algerian judoka has been disqualified from the Olympics for not competing against Butbul.

In the Tokyo Games 2021, Algeria's Fethi Nourine withdrew from a match against Butbul.

The judo federation suspended Nourine and his coach Amar Benikhlef for ten years in September 2021 because of this action.

Nourine cited the reason for his withdrawal to come from for his support for Palestine.

The judo federation said in their statement about Dris' withdrawal, "Following the Olympic Games, a full review and investigation of the situation will be conducted and further action will be taken if needed."
