Bangladesh: Opp. Party Asks India to Extradite Sheikh Hasina

Bangladesh's main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, has asked India to extradite the country's former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

The former PM suddenly resigned from her position and fled to Delhi on Aug. 5. She did so after protestors stormed her home in Dhaka during the week-long student protests against a government policy, which eventually became a nationwide protest against her administration of 16 years.

The secretary-general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated, "It is our call to you that you should hand her over to the government of Bangladesh in a legal way. The people of this country have decided to conduct her trial. Let her face that trial."

The Indian government and the former PM's relatives have revealed that Sheikh Hasina is currently in a secure location near New Delhi after she fled to the Indian capital in a helicopter.

At least 15 cases of murder and 'crimes against humanity' have been filed by the police against Sheikh Hasina after she fled Dhaka, which include killing during the student-led movement in the country during July and August. More than 450 people, mostly students, were killed during the protests.

New Delhi can turn down the request of extradition based on Article 8 of their extradition treaty, which allows signatories to refuse requests that have “not been made in good faith and the interests of justice”.

United Nations will send a human rights team to Dhaka this week to investigate the alleged crimes during the recent unrest.
