The Story of “Die Mannschaft” in World Cup 2014 Part 2

We continue our story about the German national team in the 2014 World Cup.

After the German team topped its group, it qualified for the second round to face Algeria.

The Second-Round Match

On June 30, 2010, at the Beira-Rio stadium in Porto Algerie, the German national team faced its Algerian counterpart, in front of more than 40,000 spectators who filled the stands of the match stadium.

At five o'clock Brazilian time, Brazilian international referee Sandro Ricci blew his whistle, announcing the start of the match.

The German team suffered a lot in that match, and needed the interventions of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who played the role of the Libero defender to cut the balls of Islam Slimani and his companions, the Algerians were more dangerous and relied on quick counterattacks.

The Germans also tried and created some chances, but Algerian goalkeeper Rais M'Bolhi saved them.

The match went to extra time, as Germany won 2-1

Andre Schuerrle scored for Germany in the 92nd minute, Mesut Ozil scored at the 119th minute, while Abdelmoumen Djabo scored for Algeria at the 120+1 minute.

The Quarter-Final Match

On July 4, 2014, the German national team faced France at the famous Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

In front of more than 70,000 spectators, Argentine international referee Nestor Pitana blew his whistle, announcing the start of the match.

In a match described by fans and critics as "the most boring match in the tournament", where it was a quiet game with few chances, and defensive caution prevailed from both teams.

The German national team managed to win 1-0, scored by then Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels in the 13th minute.

Thus, Germany qualified for the World Cup semi-finals for the fourth time in a row, after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the 2006 World Cup in Germany, and the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup.

The last time the Germans were eliminated from the quarterfinals was in the 1998 World Cup, when Germany lost 3-0 to Croatia.

The Semi-Final Match

On July 8, 2014, at Minrao Stadium in Belo Horizonte, the German national team faced Brazil, the "host of the tournament".

In front of more than 50,000 spectators, the Mexican international referee Marco Antonio Rodriguez blew his whistle, announcing the start of the match.

Only 11 minutes passed from the start of the match, Thomas Muller followed a cross that came from a corner and put it past goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

Then, 12 minutes later, specifically in the 23rd minute, Miroslav Klose scored the second goal for Germany (a goal that broke Ronaldo's record).

The Brazilian team collapsed in front of its fans, and its defenses opened wide, so Toni Kroos easily managed to score two goals in the 24th and 26th minutes, before Sami Khedira scored the fifth goal in the 29th minute.

Amid the tears, amazement, and bewilderment of Brazil fans in the stadium and around the world, the first half ended 5-0 in favor of Germany.

In the second half, Andre Schuerrle added the sixth and seventh goal for Germany, while Oscar scored a goal for Brazil in the 90th minute, ending the match with a 7-1 victory for the Germans.

Thus, Germany qualified for the final, where it faced Argentina on July 13 at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

The German team managed to win 1-0 after extra time, Germany’s only goal scored by Mario Gotze, in the 113th minute.

Thus, Germany won its fourth World Cup title and the first since the 1990 World Cup in Italy.
