Qatar's Akram Afif Named Asia’s Best Player Again

Qatari football sensation Akram Afif has once again been honored as the AFC Asian Player of the Year, securing the prestigious title at the AFC Annual Awards ceremony in Seoul.

This second win cements Afif’s place in Asian football history, as he becomes the first Qatari to earn this award twice. The ceremony, held at Kyung Hee University’s Grand Peace Palace, saw the 27-year-old proudly lift the trophy before an international audience.

Afif’s first AFC Player of the Year title came in 2019, and with this 2023 accolade, he joins an elite group alongside Japan’s Hidetoshi Nakata and Uzbekistan’s Server Djeparov as one of only three players to claim the honor multiple times. He is also the third player from Al Sadd SC to receive the award, with club mates Khalfan Ibrahim (2006) and Abdelkarim Hassan (2018) achieving it before him.

Known for his pivotal role with Al Sadd SC, Afif has made remarkable strides internationally and domestically. This past season, he netted 26 goals with 11 assists, helping Al Sadd secure a record-breaking 17th Qatar Stars League title and claiming his fourth Qatar Stars League Best Player award. His contributions extended to a memorable AFC Asian Cup run, where he became the first player to score a hat-trick in the final, adding the MVP and Top Scorer titles to his achievements.

Afif’s journey from the Aspire Academy to European leagues, including Spain’s La Liga and Belgium's KAS Eupen, underscores his talent and dedication. With his latest AFC title, Afif continues to inspire football fans across Asia and beyond, demonstrating the immense potential of Qatari football on the world stage.
