Qatar to Phase Out 3G Network by 2025 to Boost 4G and 5G

The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) of Qatar has set a deadline for mobile service providers to stop offering third-generation (3G) telecommunications services by December 31, 2025. This move is aimed at improving the quality of mobile services and focusing on more advanced technologies.

Focus on 4G and 5G Networks

Under this new directive, major telecom operators Ooredoo Qatar and Vodafone Qatar will be required to discontinue their 3G services by the end of 2025. The CRA’s decision is designed to optimize the use of radio spectrum resources, which will help enhance the performance of 4G and 5G networks in Qatar.

Supporting Qatar National Vision 2030

The CRA’s decision is part of a broader strategy to retire outdated technologies and shift investments toward developing and expanding 4G and 5G infrastructure. This transition supports Qatar’s National Vision 2030 by fostering growth in the telecommunications sector and contributing to economic diversification.

New Rules for Mobile Devices

In addition, the CRA has imposed an immediate ban on the import of mobile phones that only support 2G and 3G technologies. Only devices compatible with 4G and Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology, which meet the required standards and have CRA approval, will be allowed. This change ensures that consumers use up-to-date technology that supports the country’s evolving network needs.
