Qatar to Enforce Travel Ban on Traffic Law Violators

Starting September 1, 2024, Qatar is rolling out a new traffic regulation that could ground travelers with unresolved fines. According to the Ministry of Interior (MOI), anyone with outstanding traffic violations will face a travel ban—by land, air, or sea—until their dues are settled.

This move is part of Qatar’s drive to boost road safety and tighten enforcement of traffic laws. To sweeten the deal and encourage early payment, the MOI has been offering a 50% discount on traffic fines since June 1, 2024. This discount is available to all—citizens, residents, visitors, and GCC nationals—on violations recorded within the past three years. However, this offer ends on August 31, 2024.

The MOI’s crackdown doesn’t stop at travel bans. Their latest public awareness campaign highlights the importance of seatbelt use and discourages mobile phone use while driving, with data showing that these practices significantly reduce traffic accidents and injuries. Radar systems are now closely monitoring compliance with seatbelt use, speed limits, and phone usage behind the wheel.

Fines for mobile phone use while driving are QR500, and there’s no discount for these violations. Seatbelt infractions also carry a QR500 fine, but payment within 30 days can secure a discount.

The MOI’s educational push extends to proper lane usage, safe riding guidelines for electric scooters, and correct use of pedestrian crossings. Thanks to these measures, road fatalities have dropped by over 32% in the past two years, showcasing the MOI’s commitment to road safety through robust law enforcement and modern infrastructure.
