Qatar Sends Additional 15M Liters of Fuel to Gaza

Qatar has announced it will send an additional 15 million liters of fuel to the Gaza Strip, bringing its total fuel aid to 30 million liters. The energy-rich Gulf nation made the commitment on Wednesday, as part of ongoing efforts to support Gaza’s humanitarian needs.

The fuel supply comes in the wake of a fragile truce brokered by Qatar, the U.S., and Egypt, which took effect on January 19, temporarily halting the Israel-Hamas war. Since then, humanitarian aid has been flowing into Gaza, where over two million residents—many displaced by the conflict—are struggling with dire conditions.

On January 20, Qatar began supplying 1.25 million liters of fuel per day for 10 days to support relief operations. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) previously estimated that at least 160,000 liters per day are required for essential humanitarian work. However, fuel shortages have significantly hindered relief efforts, especially in Gaza’s collapsing healthcare system.

Hospitals, already overwhelmed by war-related injuries, are running critically low on fuel. The World Health Organization (WHO) warned in December that rebuilding Gaza’s health infrastructure would be an immense challenge. WHO representative Rik Peeperkorn previously emphasized that "without fuel, there are no humanitarian operations at all."

Israel, which controls Gaza’s borders, has imposed restrictions on fuel imports and other goods, citing security concerns. These limitations have drawn criticism from the UN and humanitarian organizations, who argue they severely impact essential aid distribution.

Qatar’s continued fuel assistance aims to alleviate some of the suffering in Gaza, though the long-term humanitarian needs remain immense.
