Over 50% Voter Turnout by 11am as Qatar’s Leaders Vote

Polling stations across Qatar saw a surge in participation early on as citizens voted in a landmark referendum on constitutional amendments. The Ministry of Interior confirmed that by 11 a.m., voter turnout had already surpassed 50%, underscoring strong public interest in the 2024 draft constitutional changes.

Polls opened at 7 a.m. and will remain accessible until 7 p.m.

Qatar’s leaders took part early in the day, setting an example for the nation. HH The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, alongside Father Amir HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and Qatar Foundation Chairperson HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, each cast their ballots in person at various polling centers.

Voting is being conducted across 10 paper ballot centers and 18 electronic stations, with both formats available to ease the process. Many Qatari voters, such as Abdullah Jassim Al Darwish, expressed satisfaction with the smooth and organized voting experience, according to local media outlet The Peninsula.

Participation is open to Qatari citizens aged 18 and older, who can vote in person with their Qatari or Digital Qatar IDs. Qataris living abroad can conveniently cast their votes through the Metrash2 app.

The referendum received an extra boost from the government, as Qatari employees were allowed to leave work early at 11 a.m. to vote, following a decree by HH The Amir on October 29. The Ministry of Education also announced a public holiday for schools nationwide to ensure citizens had every opportunity to participate.

As the voting proceeds, officials are preparing for immediate vote sorting and counting, with results expected within 24 hours. This referendum marks a key moment for Qatar’s future, and with such an enthusiastic early turnout, the nation is clearly tuned in to this pivotal decision.
