Mayar Sherif Is The First Egyptian Female To Win A Grand Slam Match

After beating Giulia Gatto-Monticone on Friday, she is the first to reach the Roland Garros main draw

Mayar Sherif will be the first female tennis player to qualify for the Olympic Games on Wednesday and in order to secure her spot, Sherif played three qualifying matches in the main draw in which she also beat Colombian tennis player Maria Camila Osorio Serrano. 

Sherif also said in a facebook post “Yes dreams come true! Honored to be the first Egyptian woman in history of tennis to win a Grand Slam match at #rolandgarros”

Having graduated from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California with a bachelor of science in Sports Medicine, she was also a part of the university’s women’s tennis team. After which she embarked on a journey winning eight singles titles and six doubles titles on the ITF Women’s Circuit.

Back in 2019, she also made history along with Mohamed Sawfat, as the first ever Egyptians who have a achieved a record-breaking number and earned gold medals which qualify for competing at the Olympic Games.

Her current spot is 172nd in the word and she falls under the world’s top 300 category and is going to make her debut at the Tokyo 2020 games.
