Reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian, who advocates moderate policies and limited engagement with the West, has won the Islamic Republic of Iran’s presidential election.

Pezeshkian emerged victorious in the presidential race, securing 16.3 million votes, surpassing hardline conservative candidate Saeed Jalili. The election was called following the tragic death of former President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in May.

Pezeshkian’s victory was officially confirmed by Iran’s interior ministry and marks a significant moment for the nation, which has been grappling with economic sanctions and widespread protests. Videos circulating on social media captured jubilant scenes of his supporters dancing in the streets and motorists honking their car horns in celebration.

A 69-year-old heart surgeon, Pezeshkian stood out as the only moderate among six candidates, offering a hopeful outlook for many Iranians seeking change.

With this election, there is a renewed sense of optimism for the future of Iran, as the new leadership takes on the challenges ahead.
