Hamas Approves Ceasefire Deal with Israel

Hamas approved a Gaza ceasefire deal on Wednesday, Jan. 15. Israel's security cabinet and government will have to provide their vote on the hostage deal and ceasefire agreement by Thursday, Jan. 16.

The deal will bring a temporary ceasefire to the ongoing war in Gaza. The initial phase of the deal will involve a limited prisoner exchange, the partial withdrawal of Israeli troops in Gaza, and a surge of aid into the enclave.

Thirty-three Israeli captives taken during the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks will be released. In exchange, Israel will release about 2000 Palestinian prisoners during this phase, including 250 prisoners serving life sentences.

Israel will allow civilians to return to their homes in the besieged north of Gaza.

The aid allowed in Gaza will include 600 trucks per day.

Israel will also allow wounded Palestinians to leave the Gaza Strip for medical treatment. they will open the Rafah crossing with Egypt seven days after the implementation of the first phase.

The second and third phases are still to be negotiated. The second phase will include the release of all remaining Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

Also, according to the current document, Israel will initiate its complete withdrawal from Gaza, which might not be supported by the Israeli government.

According to the draft, if the conditions for the second phase are met, then the bodies of the remaining captives must be handed over.

This must be done in return for a three- to five-year reconstruction plan to be conducted under international supervision.

There is no agreement about who will administer Gaza beyond the ceasefire.
