- Publish date: Thursday، 12 December 2024
The Luigi Mangione case has been trending on social media since the 26-year-old was arrested on Monday, Dec. 9 as the prime suspect in the murder case of UnitedHealthcare's chief executive Brian Thompson.
Thompson was fatally shot in New York City on Wednesday, Dec. 4. Law enforcement sources reveal that the words "deny", "defend" and "depose" were written on the shell casings found at the scene of Thompson's murder, which may be a reference to the three Ds of insurance, tactics companies use to reject claims made by patients.
Mangione was arrested on Monday at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania where he had guns, bullets, fake IDs, and cash.
The 26-year-old was also in possession of a handwritten document that heavily criticized corporate America, according to the police.
Mangione comes from a prominent family in Baltimore who own country clubs, nursing homes and a radio station, according to the local media.
Shortly after his arrest, his cousin, Republican state lawmaker Nino Mangione, released a statement saying, "We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved."
Luigi Mangione graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor's and master's degree in computer science.
He worked as a data engineer for TrueCar, a digital retailing website for new and used cars. However, a company spokesperson revealed that Mangione has not worked at the company since 2023.
In recent years, the 26-year-old was suffering from back pain and even underwent surgery for it.
Local media reports reveal that Mangione's mother had reported him missing in November to San Francisco authorities, explaining how she had not heard from her son since July this year.
