Egypt Bids for 2036, 2040 Olympics, Seeks Africa's 1st Games

Egypt is set to make a significant push to host the Summer Olympics in 2036 and 2040. The country's recent upgrades to its infrastructure and sports facilities are key to its bid, according to Mustapha Berraf, head of the African National Olympic Committees Association (ANOCA).

Modernizing for the Future

As the most populous country in the Arab world, Egypt has been investing heavily in its infrastructure. The Egypt International Olympic City, under construction since 2015 in the new administrative capital east of Cairo, will feature a 93,900-capacity national stadium and 21 other sports facilities. These upgrades are part of Egypt's broader strategy to modernize and prepare for a major international event like the Olympics.

A Historic First for Africa

Africa has never hosted the Olympics, making Egypt's bid historic. Cairo had previously bid for the 2008 Games but was unsuccessful. Berraf's announcement highlights Africa's growing ambitions in global sports, with Egypt leading the charge.

Potential Competition

While Egypt sets its sights on 2036 and 2040, other cities are also vying for the 2036 Olympics. Countries like Indonesia, India, Turkey, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have shown interest. Additionally, South Africa's Cape Town might also enter the race, though details are yet to be confirmed.

Looking Ahead

With Los Angeles set to host the 2028 Summer Games and Brisbane preparing for 2032, the race for 2036 is already heating up. International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has noted substantial interest in the 2036 Games, with several cities and countries expressing their intent.
