In a significant shift in trade policy, US President Donald Trump announced on Apr. 9, 2025, a 90-day suspension of new tariffs for most countries while concurrently escalating tariffs on Chinese imports to 125%.
The announcement came after the US witnessed a stock market crash last week, with a combined $6.6 trillion in value lost on Thursday and Friday.
The increase in tariifs for China came about after the country responded with an 84 percent reciprocating tariff to US' 104 percent tariff.
President Trump said in a post on social media, "Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately."
In response to Trump's escalated tariffs, China's State Council Tariff Commission said, "The US escalation of tariffs on China is a mistake upon mistake, severely infringing upon China’s legitimate rights and interests, and seriously damaging the multilateral trading system based on rules.”
The news of the 90-day pause comes after economists forecasted a recession when Trump announced the tariffs.
