It was the first time that the South American continent hosted the World Cup since the 1978 World Cup, which was held in Argentina, it is also the first time that two consecutive tournaments have been organized outside the European continent after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
All the teams that won the FIFA World Cup since the first edition of the tournament in 1930 participated in this tournament, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, and England.
The defending champions Spain, Italy, and England were eliminated from the group stage, Uruguay was eliminated from the round of 16, France was eliminated from the quarterfinals, and Germany, Argentina, Brazil, and the Netherlands qualified for the semi-finals, where the German team managed to win the championship title for the fourth time in its history. After defeating Argentina with a single goal, Germany becomes the first European team to win the World Cup in the Latin continent.
The draw placed Germany in Group G along with Portugal, the United States, and Ghana.
Germany opened its group stage matches on June 16, against Portugal at the Fonte stadium Nova in Salvador de Bahia city.
At 1:30 pm local time in Brazil, Serbian international referee Miurad Majic blew his whistle, announcing the start of the match.
