Tropical Storm Enteng, also known internationally as Yagi, has become the fifth major cyclone to hit the Philippines in 2024. The storm is currently bringing severe weather to Luzon and Eastern Visayas, with widespread moderate to torrential rainfall. The storm has intensified the southwest monsoon, or "habagat," leading to more rain in many areas.

Landslides and Drowning Incidents Lead to Multiple Fatalities

In Antipolo City, the heavy rains triggered landslides and caused flash floods, resulting in the tragic loss of seven lives. The victims included a pregnant woman and two children, who perished in landslides. Four others drowned in separate incidents, according to the Antipolo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

Meanwhile, in Cebu City and Northern Samar, four more people lost their lives due to landslides. The victims, ranging in age from 17 to 76, were buried under the debris. In Naga City, Bicol, an 8-month-old baby drowned in her flooded home, and another person was electrocuted while checking on his shop.

Rescue Efforts and Missing Persons

Rescue teams are currently searching for three fishermen who have been missing since Saturday after heading out to sea despite the rain. Additionally, four people were injured in Northern Samar and have been taken to the Biri District Hospital for treatment.

Thousands Affected Seaports Closed

Tropical Storm Enteng has affected at least 1,395 families across Luzon and Visayas, with thousands forced to evacuate due to severe flooding. The Office of Civil Defense reported that over 4,000 residents in Bicol were impacted by the storm, leading to the closure of 14 seaports in Calabarzon and Bicol. The Philippine Coast Guard has also confirmed that over 2,400 passengers are stranded in various ports.

Power Outages and Flight Cancellations

The heavy rainfall and strong winds have caused widespread power outages, affecting more than 28,000 Meralco customers in Metro Manila, Cavite, and nearby provinces. The Department of Energy reported ongoing restoration efforts in several affected areas.

Additionally, 29 flights were canceled at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and other airports across Luzon due to the inclement weather, leaving more than 300 passengers stranded.

Storm to Exit PAR by Thursday

Tropical Storm Enteng is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) by Thursday. However, the weather bureau, Pagasa, has warned of the potential development of another tropical cyclone within the next two weeks, which could bring further disruption.
