History of Social Media Day

This takes us back to 2010 when Mashable, known to use social media to connect diverse cultures, movements, and audiences across social media, launched World Social Media Day on June 30 in appreciation of the role of these innovative means of communication in our lives and to celebrate and enjoy the positives they bring to our lives.

Timeline of Popular Social Media Platforms

Today it's worth talking about the first-ever social media platform launched in 1997, sixdegrees, which Andrew Weinreich founded, allowed users to list friends and family members and had features like profiles, bulletin boards, and school affiliations. At its peak, sixdegrees had over a million users but was eventually closed down in 2001.

It was followed by the launch of the Friendster platform in 2002, which reached more than one hundred million users, mostly in Asia, and then the LinkedIn platform was launched to become the first business-focused social media platform in 2003. As for Facebook, it was launched in 2004 and became so popular among people from all over the world to this day that you barely find someone who doesn't have a Facebook account.

Followed by YouTube in 2005 and then Twitter in 2006, while the Instagram platform was launched in 2010, which gained more than a million users during the first two months, which prompted Facebook to buy it for $1 billion in 2012. It is worth mentioning that Facebook is always trying to dominate social platforms; it bought WhatsApp for $16 billion in 2014, while it couldn't buy Snapchat, which is famous for its disappearing stories feature.

We also mention the latest addition to this list, the TikTok app that was introduced in 2016 and has become incredibly popular due to its extensive music and video editing features.

Social media has become a means of instant communication, often with friends and family, but also with complete strangers. It has become a great source for news, shopping, finding influencers for businesses, and general entertainment. Social Media Day is for us to enjoy the positives these platforms have brought into our lives. Share a photo or two using the hashtag #SMDay, this year is your time to participate!
