Drama 1882

Drama 1882 is a powerful historical film that delves into the aftermath of the British invasion of Egypt in 1882. The narrative captures the complexities of Egyptian society as it grapples with the occupation, focusing on the personal and political struggles that ensue.

The film is directed, choreographed and composed by Egyptian artist Wael Shawky.

Perfumed With Mint

The story follows a character navigating this almost ghostly environment in Cairo, providing a haunting exploration of isolation and the remnants of life in an urban space that feels both familiar and eerily empty. The film focuses on a lovelorn doctor and his friend who want to escape the ghosts of their space. The friend, Mahdy, experiences a strange condition where mint sprouts from his body.

Egyptian cinematographer Muhammad Hamdy debuted as a director with this film.

Sudan, Remember Us

The film begins in the spring of 2019 when the dictatorship of Omar al-Bashir was overthrown and the jubilation that the people of the country experienced. However, the film also chronicles the military crackdown that began and led to the rise of violence.

From Ground Zero

This project is a collection of 22 short films by Gazan filmmakers, featuring the ongoing reality in Gaza. The project is spearheaded by Palestinian filmmaker Rashid Masharawi.

Front Row

This film is a dramedy that follows the fight between two matriarchs who vie for the perfect spot on the beach. The film is made by Algerian filmmaker Merzak Allouache.

Happy Holidays

This film is a family drama that follows the chain of events that result from a minor car accident. Palestinian director Scandar Copti has directed this film.

TIFF 2024’s Arab film lineup is a testament to the vibrant and diverse storytelling emerging from the Arab world. Each film offers a unique lens through which to view the region, from its rich history to its contemporary struggles. This selection not only entertains but also educates and inspires, making it a must-see for anyone interested in global cinema.
