What is a Planetary Alignment?

In simple terms, a planetary alignment occurs when planets line up in the sky, creating a visually captivating scene. While they aren’t actually lined up in space (thanks to their different orbits around the Sun), they’ll appear to be in a straight line from our point of view on Earth. It’s like watching a natural cosmic dance unfold right before your eyes!

What to Expect

The event is being organized by the Qatar Astronomy & Space Club in collaboration with Everester Observatory. Astrophotographer and founder of Everester Observatory, Ajith Everester, invites everyone to experience this unique opportunity. “It’s a rare chance to observe bright planets like Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn through telescopes,” says Ajith.

However, don’t get your hopes too high about spotting Uranus and Neptune. These distant planets are much fainter, and seeing them from urban locations like Doha may prove challenging.

When and Where?

The planetary alignment will be visible at Old Doha Port on January 25, 2025, from 6 pm to 8 pm. Whether you’re an avid stargazer or just curious about the skies, this is an event you won’t want to miss.

What’s Next?

If you can’t make it to the event, don’t worry! The planetary alignment will continue through February. However, as the days pass, Venus and Saturn will move closer to the western horizon, making the observation window shorter and more difficult.

Amateur astronomer Navin Anand shares a tip: “You can still try to spot the planets in the coming weeks, but keep in mind that the best viewing window will be early on.”
