Qatar’s dynamic beach volleyball duo, Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan, kicked off their 2024 Paris Olympics campaign in spectacular fashion.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics bronze medallists triumphed over Italy’s World No.13 pair, Paolo Nicolai and Samuele Cottafava, with a straight-sets victory (21-19, 21-18).
Playing their opening match in Pool A at the iconic foot of the Eiffel Tower, Cherif and Tijan showcased their prowess and determination. This win sets a promising tone for their next encounters in the group stage.

Following this, the Qatari team will face Australia’s Mark Nicolaidis and Izac Carracher in their final Pool A match on August 1.
Other Qatari Athletes in Action:
On Saturday, Qatari swimmer Abdulaziz Al Obaidly competed in the 100M breaststroke qualifying round, finishing sixth in Heat 2 with a time of 1:04.31. Although he did not advance to the next round, Al Obaidly expressed satisfaction with his performance and vowed to continue improving.
“The atmosphere was electrifying, with fans creating a football stadium-like experience. Having my parents there was incredibly special. I’ll keep striving to better my performance,” said Al Obaidly.
QSA's Future Plans:
Qatar Swimming Association (QSA) President Khalil Ibrahim Al Jaber praised Al Obaidly’s efforts and outlined future plans for Qatari swimmers.
“We are preparing our athletes for the 2026 Youth Olympics and the 2028 Olympic Games. Al Obaidly’s participation in Paris is a positive reflection of QSA’s dedication to growing the sport. We’re also proud to have Qatari referee Jassim Abdullah officiating at the Games,” said Al Jaber.
