Qatari Nationals Will No Longer Need a Visa to Visit UK

Since October 25, 2023, Qatari citizens have been able to apply for the ETA, primarily using a mobile app designed for a quick and straightforward application process. The UK, having welcomed nearly 800,000 visitors from the Gulf region last year—including 45,000 from Qatar—anticipates an increase in visitors from these areas.
Jon Wilks CMG, the UK's Ambassador to Qatar, expressed enthusiasm about the scheme, noting its role in easing travel for Qataris and strengthening the UK-Qatar relationship. He anticipates a rise in Qatari visitors, further enhancing connections between the two nations.

The ETA initiative is set to expand to other Gulf countries, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan, starting February 22, 2024. Nationals from these countries can apply for their ETA from February 1, 2024. The new ETA replaces the existing Electronic Visa Waivers (EVW) and is priced at £10. It permits multiple entries into the UK over two years or until the passport's expiration, whichever comes first. This change simplifies short-term visits for Gulf and Jordanian nationals.

Applicants for the ETA must provide personal and biometric information and undergo security checks to prevent potential threats from entering the UK. Most applications are processed within hours, though the standard timeframe is up to three days.
Patricia Yates, CEO of VisitBritain, highlighted the benefits of the ETA scheme for Qatari visitors, making travel to the UK more accessible and affordable. She anticipates a boost in tourism from the Gulf region, boosted by strong airline connections and promotional campaigns. VisitBritain aims to enhance the UK's tourism appeal to Gulf travelers into 2024 and beyond.

To facilitate a smooth transition to the new system, the UK government is collaborating with global transportation carriers. The ETA scheme is expected to be extended worldwide in the future, targeting travelers who currently do not require a UK visa, including those from Europe and America. Details on the scheme's expansion to other nationalities will be announced later.
