In a nail-biting clash at the Al Bayt Stadium, Qatar secured a spot in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup semifinals by defeating Uzbekistan in a 3-2 penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw.
Defending champions Qatar displayed resilience as goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham's crucial saves led to the winning penalty by Pedro Correia.
The intense battle saw Qatar take the lead in the 27th minute, with captain Hassan Al Haydos' shot resulting in an own goal by Utkir Yusupov. However, Uzbekistan retaliated, and Odiljon Hamrobekov equalized in the 58th minute with a low strike.
Despite both teams' efforts, neither could secure a decisive goal in regular or extra time, leading to the thrilling penalty shoot-out. Barsham's saves from Rustamjon Ashurmatov, Zafarmurod Abdirakhmatov, and Jaloliddin Masharipov propelled Qatar to victory.
Qatar will now face Iran in the semifinals, setting the stage for an exhilarating clash. Meanwhile, Iran secured their semifinal berth by overcoming Japan 2-1. Alireza Jahanbakhsh's late penalty sealed the comeback for Iran after trailing in the first half.
