Qatar has ramped up its diplomatic efforts, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and committing an additional $100 million in aid for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The move comes as tensions between Lebanon and Israel reach critical levels, prompting fears of wider regional conflict.

Dr. Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the urgency of peace during a recent briefing, stating, “The situation between Lebanon and Israel, since October 8, poses an intolerable risk of regional escalation.” He further noted that Qatar, alongside several Arab nations, has urged Western and Asian countries, including the U.S., Canada, and EU members, to push for a ceasefire.

Describing the conflict as “unjustifiable,” Dr. Al Ansari stressed the unacceptable human toll, highlighting over 600 deaths within just two days. He also warned that without immediate international intervention, the region could spiral into further violence.

In Gaza, the humanitarian situation has become dire. Dr. Al Ansari condemned the blockade preventing essential aid from entering the area, calling it "a fully-fledged crime" of deliberate starvation. Relief organizations report that residents of Gaza are down to one meal a day, with 83% of vital food aid blocked by border closures.

In response, Qatar announced a $100 million pledge to support relief efforts, including contributions to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Qatar’s Minister of State for International Cooperation, Lolwah bint Rashid Al Khater, reiterated Qatar’s commitment to humanitarian causes during a UN General Assembly meeting in New York, calling for a united global effort to back UNRWA and alleviate the suffering of Palestinians.

Qatar has been a long-time supporter of UNRWA and was the first Arab country to sign a multi-year funding agreement with the agency in 2018.
