Qatar Airways has exciting news for travelers: the airline is resuming daily flights to Canberra (CBR) starting December 2025, after a four-year hiatus. The service will be operated by the Boeing 777, featuring the airline's renowned Qsuite Business Class and complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi, ensuring passengers a comfortable and connected journey.

This marks a significant milestone for Qatar Airways, reconnecting Australia's capital with its extensive global network of over 170 destinations through Hamad International Airport (DOH). With this new service, Canberra becomes the airline’s sixth destination in Australia.

Qatar Airways’ Commitment to Canberra

Qatar Airways first launched flights to Canberra in 2018, but the route was suspended in early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While there were plans to restart the service in 2022 via Melbourne, operational challenges and ground handling service issues led to delays and cancellation. Now, with the resumption of daily flights, the airline is reaffirming its commitment to Canberra and the region.

Qatar Airways Group CEO, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, shared the importance of the route, saying, “We are delighted to be able to serve Canberra once again. The nation’s capital, the political heart of Australia, rightly expects to be served by a range of international airlines. Whether traveling for business, government services, or leisure, our commitment to Canberra will bring much-needed healthy competition and greater choice for passengers.”

Boosting Connectivity for Canberra

The resumption of the Qatar Airways service is set to improve Canberra’s connectivity with key global destinations, especially in Europe, the United Kingdom, and the Middle East. Canberra Airport CEO, Stephen Byron, described the return of Qatar Airways as a "pivotal moment" for the region. He emphasized that the flights will not only provide access to a global network but will also drive economic growth, create jobs, and enhance tourism.

This new service aligns with the Government's goal of AU$5 billion in visitor expenditure by 2030. Byron stated, "It enhances connectivity and strengthens business connections while supporting the Government’s tourism initiatives."

Qatar Airways and Virgin Atlantic Partnership

Qatar Airways’ return to Canberra also supports its growing partnership with Virgin Australia (VA), which is awaiting regulatory approval. This collaboration will allow seamless travel from Canberra to over 100 destinations across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

Loyalty members of both Qatar Airways’ Privilege Club and Virgin Australia’s Velocity Frequent Flyer programs will enjoy expanded benefits, including the ability to earn and redeem points and access each other’s lounges.

A Win for Local Tourism and Business

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr welcomed the announcement, recognizing its positive impact on local tourism and the international student market. “Aviation access is the biggest driver of growth in the sector. Qatar Airways’ return will benefit the entire Canberra region, creating tourism, trade, and investment opportunities,” Barr said.

With its daily flights to Canberra, Qatar Airways is helping the Australian capital become even more accessible to travelers from around the world, bringing a host of opportunities for the region’s economy and residents.
