London Heathrow Airport announced a complete closure on Friday, Mar. 21, leading to the diversion and cancellation of over 1,000 flights.

The shutdown came after an overnight fire erupted at an electric substation that cut off the airport's power.

It is unknown when the flights will resume, but the disruption to flights will continue into Saturday.

About 120 flights in the air were diverted to other airports including France, the Netherlands, and Ireland.

Heathrow Airport was expecting flights from Sydney, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, Johannesburg, New York, Miami, and many other cities on Friday.

London's Metropolitan Police has confirmed that its counter-terrorism unit will investigate the incident, but so far there has been "no indication of foul play”.

This incident could lead the aviation industry to experience a severe financial hit of tens of millions of pounds.

Global flight schedules will be affected by this incident, which is pushing carriers to reconfigure their networks.
