Oscar-winner and known for playing Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter film franchise, Dame Maggie Smith passed away, aged 89, on Friday, Sep. 27.

The news was confirmed by her sons, who revealed that the British star passed away peacefully at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. She has left behind her two sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, and five grandchildren.
Dame Maggie Smith won various awards during her career including two Academy Awards, five BAFTA awards, four Emmy awards, three Golden Globe awards, a Tony award, and six Laurence Olivier nominations.
Queen Elizabeth II declared the veteran British star a dame in 1990. Smith was world-renowned for her roles in the Harry Potter film franchise, the British period series 'Downtown Abbey', and other projects.
The actress was married twice: to fellow actor Robert Stephens between 1967 and 1975 and to Beverley Cross between 1975 and his death in 1998.
