The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) hosted the 2024 Sports Excellence Awards, recognizing the country’s finest athletes and institutions in a grand ceremony held at the Qatar National Convention Centre.

Under the patronage of QOC President HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, the event celebrated Qatar’s remarkable achievements in sports over the past season.

Star high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim earned the Male Athlete of the Year title, while airgun shooter Amal Mohammed Mahmoud was named Female Athlete of the Year, cementing their places as icons of Qatar’s sporting success.

Emerging Talent Recognized

The awards also highlighted promising talent, with 400m hurdler Ismail Dawood Abakar and taekwondo practitioner Noor Nizar Abdulqader Mohammed receiving accolades as the Promising Male and Female Athletes of the Season, respectively.

Celebrating Excellence Across the Board

Notable winners included:

  • Coach of the Season: Hendrik Jacobus Kotze, sprint and hurdles coach at Qatar Athletics Federation.
  • Para-Athletes of the Season: Ali Radi Arshid and Sara Hamdi Masoud.
  • Male and Female Administrators of the Season: Khalifa Yousuf Abdulmalik and Amal Mohammed Awad.
  • Distinguished Organization Awards: Qatar Foundation and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education for their contributions to sports and community events.

The evening also honored institutions like Alkass Sports Channels as Media Partner and celebrated the Local Organizing Committees for hosting major events such as the World Aquatics Championships Doha 2024 and World Judo Championships Doha 2023.

A Remarkable Year for Qatari Sports

Reflecting on the season, QOC Secretary General Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain praised Qatar’s achievements, including Mutaz Barshim’s historic fourth Olympic medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. He also emphasized the successful hosting of global events, further solidifying Qatar’s reputation as a leader in the international sports arena.

“Qatar’s unwavering commitment to sports excellence, bolstered by the support of HH The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and QOC President HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, has propelled our athletes to new heights while establishing Qatar as a premier destination for global sporting events,” Al Buenain remarked.

From stellar athletic achievements to the hosting of iconic events, the 2024 Sports Excellence Awards showcased Qatar’s dedication to fostering a thriving sports community and global recognition.
