Ceasefire negotiations aimed at resolving the Gaza conflict wrapped up in Doha, with discussions set to continue in Cairo next week.
The talks, mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, spanned 48 hours and were described as "serious and constructive" by the mediators.
The negotiators confirmed they are working on a comprehensive ceasefire agreement, including the release of hostages and detainees. The mediators emphasized that technical teams will focus on the details of implementing the agreement, particularly its humanitarian provisions.
The negotiations resumed following a statement from the leaders of Qatar, the U.S., and Egypt, urging an agreement between Israel and Hamas. The talks revolved around a U.S.-proposed three-stage plan, initially presented in May, which aims to establish a ceasefire and withdraw Israeli forces from Gaza.
Despite the progress, Hamas has expressed dissatisfaction, insisting on a deal that obliges Israel to comply without introducing new conditions. An anonymous Hamas source noted that the group rejects any modifications that do not align with previously agreed terms.
The backdrop to these negotiations is fraught with tension, especially after Israel's recent assassinations of key figures in Hamas and Hezbollah. These actions have exacerbated regional unrest, with Iran and Hezbollah vowing retaliation.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken was expected to visit the region, including stops in Qatar, Egypt, and Israel, to support the peace efforts. However, due to the volatile situation, his trip has reportedly been postponed.
As the situation remains fluid, all eyes are on the upcoming talks in Cairo, which could prove pivotal in shaping the future of the Gaza conflict.
