  • Qatar has been working to safeguard the safety of migrant workers.
  • Qatar has grown significantly in recent years.
  • New legislation has been enacted to eliminate the need for most workers to obtain exit permits in order to leave Qatar.
  • Procedures were implemented to make it easier for the expats to move to another job. There is no longer a necessity for a previous employer's No-Objection Certificate (NOC).
  • Allowing for a non-discriminatory minimum wage.
  • Introducing 20 Qatar Visa Centers (QVCs) in various regions of the world, including India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, and Tunisia, to ensure that workers are not abused while working from their homes.
  • The Worker's Support and Insurance Fund was established to save workers and ensure their rights, allowing them to work in a safe atmosphere.

Minimum Wage

Qatar's Law in No. 17 of 2020 established a monthly minimum salary of QAR 1,000 (Qatari riyals) for all private-sector workers, including domestic workers, beginning in March 2021. The employer sets aside QAR 500 per month for housing expenditures. In addition, if the employer already provides appropriate food or housing for the employee or domestic helper, QAR 300 per month is set aside for food.

The previous monthly minimum pay was QAR 750.

The idea of a minimum salary is fairly recent in the Middle East, yet it is thought to support labor market stability and growth in Qatar.

The Minister of Administrative Reform, Labor, and Social Affairs has also committed to establishing a Minimum Wage Committee, which will examine employee and domestic worker requirements every month to ensure fair pay.

NOCs

The nicest part about the recent changes is that employees no longer need to have a No-Objection Certificate. Workers' rights shall be respected, and their protection will be ensured, according to Qatar's National Vision 2030. This action will help Qatar to grow by attracting more investors and creating additional job possibilities. More skills will be generated as labor market competitiveness grows.

Employees will be able to locate brand-new job prospects as a result of the law, which will help the economy grow. Furthermore, individuals who have worked for the same firm for two years or fewer only need to give one month's notice if they choose to leave.

Furthermore, while employees may be placed on probation, the length of probation cannot exceed six months, according to the law. This is fantastic news since it assures that workers' rights are safeguarded and that their employers are not exploiting them.

Labor Code

The Qatari Labor Law is a set of rules and regulations that spell out the legal rights, responsibilities, and constraints that workers, employers, and workers committees have. The Labor Law should be followed by all parties involved.

Qatari Job Opportunities

Qatari citizens are given preference in the job market. Various services are provided by the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labor, and Social Affairs to match employers with available talent. Qataris searching for employment should apply with the ministry to be considered for job openings.

Employers who desire to hire non-Qataris or attract workers from other countries must first obtain official approval.

Recruitment

Foreigners can work in Qatar for a variety of companies. Expatriates can shift employers after finishing their employment contract in the country or if the company ends the contract without the expatriate facing any legal consequences. If the contract duration is not established, the expatriate must work for the same employer for at least five years.

In the case of undefined agreements, if the expatriate wishes to terminate the present contract before its term or the five-year period has expired, the current employer must approve the move to another employer.

Hours of Work

Without overtime pay, the largest number of working hours allowed each week is 48. During Ramadan, working hours are decreased to 36 hours per week.

Every week, workers are entitled to a minimum of one day of relaxation. Except for those who work shifts, Friday is a regular day of relaxation for all workers. No employee should work 2 consecutive Fridays.

Committees of Workers

Qatari workers have the option of forming worker committees or joining larger trade unions. Strikes are permitted as long as the norms of the Employment Legislation are followed.
