King Abdullah Rebuffs Trump’s Gaza Resettlement Plan
Jordan’s leader stands firm against forced Palestinian displacement
Jordan’s King Abdullah has firmly rejected US President Donald Trump’s proposal for Jordan to take in displaced Palestinians, reiterating that his country will not support any forced resettlement plans.
During a meeting at the White House, Trump pushed his vision of relocating Gaza’s population and transforming the war-torn strip into a so-called "Riviera of the Middle East." Despite mounting global backlash, he remained adamant that displaced Palestinians would not be allowed to return to their homes.
“We’re going to take it. We’re going to hold it, we’re going to cherish it,” Trump said, insisting his plan would bring stability and economic growth to the region.
King Abdullah, however, stood his ground. “This is the unified Arab position,” he later posted on Twitter/X. “Rebuilding Gaza without displacing Palestinians and addressing the dire humanitarian situation should be the priority for all.”
Despite Jordan’s opposition, Trump claimed both Jordan and Egypt would ultimately agree to host displaced Palestinians. “I believe we’ll have a parcel of land in Jordan. I believe we’ll have a parcel of land in Egypt,” he stated, though neither country has agreed to such a plan.
Trump also suggested that US aid to Jordan and Egypt could be leveraged, though he denied using financial support as a threat. “We contribute a lot of money to Jordan, and to Egypt by the way – a lot to both. But I don’t have to threaten that. I think we’re above that,” he said.
King Abdullah has consistently opposed any moves that involve the annexation of Palestinian land or forced displacement. Jordan, already home to over two million Palestinian refugees, has long been cautious about policies that could disrupt the country’s delicate demographic balance.
Egypt’s foreign ministry also weighed in, affirming its commitment to Gaza’s reconstruction without displacement. “Our vision ensures Palestinians remain on their land,” the ministry stated, signaling strong regional resistance to Trump’s proposal.
While Trump remains steadfast in his plan, opposition from Arab leaders continues to grow, setting the stage for further diplomatic tensions.
