Japan, a four-time champion, smoothly advanced to the Asian Cup quarter-finals, securing a 3-1 triumph against Bahrain at Al Thumama Stadium.
Ritsu Doan, Takefusa Kubo, and Ayase Ueda contributed to Japan's goals. Despite Bahrain coach Juan Antonio Pizzi seeking redemption, Japan, led by Hajime Moriyasu, demonstrated dominance, comfortably progressing to the next stage.
The victory propels Japan to face the winner of the Iran versus Syria last-16 match. Moriyasu acknowledged the evolving competition in Asian football, emphasizing Japan's continuous improvement and the players' dedication.
Japan took an early lead with Seiya Maikuma's rebounded goal in the 31st minute. A stroke of fortune saw Kubo scoring the second just after halftime, confirmed after a VAR check. Bahrain found hope as a defensive mix-up led to a goal, but Ueda sealed Japan's win with a skillful finish.
Moriyasu acknowledged room for improvement, despite the convincing performance. The technical prowess of the Japanese team shone throughout, with Ueda's goal securing their spot in the quarter-finals.
