The Shura Council has recommended licensing social media influencers in a bid to regulate the rapidly growing digital content space. The proposal aims to ensure that influencers align their posts with Qatar’s cultural values and ethical standards.

As digital platforms wield increasing influence over the public—especially the youth—the Council stressed the importance of accountability in content creation. From advertisements to lifestyle vlogs, influencers shape opinions and trends, but unregulated content poses risks to societal values.

Under the proposed framework, influencers would need to register with state authorities and adhere to strict guidelines promoting transparency, avoiding misinformation, and respecting Qatari traditions. Violations could lead to penalties or even revocation of licenses.

Shura Council Speaker HE Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim highlighted that while Qatar upholds freedom of expression, digital platforms must operate within the boundaries of public order and moral values. “Content creation is a powerful tool—it must be used responsibly to strengthen unity and respect cultural identity,” he noted.

The move has sparked conversations across Qatar’s buzzing social media scene. Some creators see it as a step toward professionalism and accountability, while others fear it might stifle creativity.

As Qatar takes strides to regulate the digital influencer industry, the country could set a precedent for balancing free expression with ethical responsibility in the online world. For aspiring influencers, the message is clear: If you want to thrive in Qatar’s digital space, you’ll need to follow the rules.

Stay tuned for more updates as this proposal moves toward implementation. Could this be the start of a new era for social media in Qatar?
