The global stocktake was approved by 198 nations at COP28 in Dubai on Wednesday, Dec. 13.

COP28 President Dr. Sultan Al Jaber called the global stocktake 'UAE Consensus'.

What is in the Historic Global Stocktake Document?

This global stocktake is the first document in the history of the climate change summit to call for a transition away from fossil fuels.

The agreement calls for countries to make fossil fuels net zero by 2050.

The document also calls for the transition to renewables and demands a reduction in the use of fossil fuels.

The language of the document on the demands to reduce methane emissions is strong, however, the language on coal is weaker than expected.

Also, the document allows oil and gas-producing countries a bit of flexibility in their transition away from fossil fuels.

The Final Meeting and Final Deal of COP28

Country representatives were called in for a final meeting early on Wednesday morning where they decided on the final agreement.

After the final deal was approved, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber thanked the delegates who attended the summit and said the agreement would help "secure the future of this beautiful planet for many years to come."

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, "To those who opposed a clear reference to a phase-out of fossil fuels in the Cop28 text, I want to say that a fossil fuel phase-out is inevitable whether they like it or not."
