Hamas' leader Yahya Sinwar was killed by Israeli troops in Gaza on Thursday, Oct. 17.

The Israeli army issued a statement explaining how Sinwar was killed in an operation in southern Gaza. The Israeli military was conducting an operation in the area after receiving intelligence about the suspected locations of senior Hamas members.

Sinwar was killed alongside two other Hamas soldiers from the 828th Brigade. The Israeli military ran the process the identify bodies and confirmed Sinwar death after that process, according to their statement. 

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also issued a statement, confirming Sinwar's death, but he made no promise to end the ongoing war in Gaza, which has killed more than 42,400 Palestinians. 

He said, "Today evil has suffered a heavy blow, but the task before us is not yet complete....the war is not over yet."

Yahya Sinwar became the leader of Hamas after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, Iran on Jul. 31.
