US Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris called for a ceasefire in Gaza and a hostage deal between Israel and Hamas at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago on Thursday, Aug. 22.
Harris also assured that the US would ensure that Israel could defend itself. She said, "President [Joe] Biden and I are working to end this war such that Israel is secure, the hostages are released, the suffering in Gaza ends and the Palestinian people can realise their right to dignity, security, freedom and self-determination."
The Democratic presidential candidate also spoke about the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, saying, "So many innocent lives lost – desperate, hungry people fleeing for safety, over and over again, the scale of suffering is heartbreaking."

Harris' speech ended the hopes of those who called for the US to end military support to Israel. She said, "I will always ensure Israel has the ability to defend itself, because the people of Israel must never again face the horror that a terrorist organisation called Hamas caused on Oct.7."
The US VP has been heavily involved in the US' diplomatic push for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas as she was part of a phone conversation between President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
