on April 21 at the age of 88.
In his post, the singer and It’s Showtime host shared a clip of himself performing “Tell the World of His Love” — the official theme song of the 2015 Papal Visit in Manila. Darren was just 13 when he was selected to perform during one of the biggest events of that year.
“Ten years ago, I had the privilege of singing for Pope Francis during his visit to the Philippines,” he wrote. “It was an honor to be chosen to sing for such a historical event.” He added, “He’s made a huge impact on lives around the world. May he rest in peace.”
The 2015 performance that marked a milestone in his career
Espanto’s performance happened during the Interfaith Meeting and Encounter with the Youth at the University of Santo Tomas — one of the major stops of Pope Francis’ five-day visit in the country.
At the time, the then-rising star said the moment felt spiritual and unforgettable. In a previous interview, he said, “It’s like singing for God. It’s truly something I’ll always treasure.”
Remembering the Pope’s legacy
Darren also described Pope Francis as a symbol of kindness, faith, and humility. “He gives people hope and relief,” he said. “He reminds us what it means to be human.”
The video tribute has since gained attention, with many fans also expressing their sadness over the Pope’s passing and remembering the iconic Manila event.
