The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi’s single-use plastic policy, since its launch on June 1, 2022, has avoided the use of 87 million single-use plastic bags and reduced the use of this type of bag by more than 90%, which contributes to supporting efforts to enhance sustainability in the emirate.
More than 80% of the sales outlets are committed to voluntary fees, including the main retail outlets in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, which had signed a voluntary declaration committing to support the implementation of the single-use plastics policy in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and to secure alternatives, resources, and financing to support environmental protection.

These entities were committed to implementing the Abu Dhabi government's declaration banning single-use plastic bags, and collecting a price from customers of their outlets for each alternative reusable plastic shopping bag.
