To commemorate the 126th celebration of Philippine Independence Day, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) will release 126 inmates on Friday. This brings the total number of inmates freed under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s administration to 14,324, including 592 inmates released last month.

Personnel Promotions
In recognition of their exemplary performance, 95 BuCor personnel will be promoted. The promotions include one corrections chief superintendent, four corrections superintendents, three corrections technical chief inspectors, five corrections chief inspectors, one corrections senior inspector, 10 corrections senior officer IV, 27 corrections officers II, and four non-uniformed personnel. Additionally, 13 new non-uniformed personnel will take their oath of office.
Historical Context
A brief history of BuCor notes that the San Ramon Prison in Zamboanga was established on August 21, 1870, by a Royal Decree issued in 1869. It was initially created to incarcerate Muslim rebels and political prisoners opposed to Spanish rule.
