Algerian Boxer Imane Khelif Wins Gold at Paris 2024 Olympics

Khelif, representing Algeria in the women’s 66-kilogram division, triumphed on Friday over China's Yang Liu with a 5-0 win in the final at Roland-Garros Stadium. 

The controversy surrounding Khelif began when the International Boxing Association, which has been banned from the Olympics since 2019, questioned her eligibility due to elevated testosterone levels. Despite this, Khelif won her opening bout against Italy’s Angela Carini, who abandoned the fight after just 46 seconds, fueling further speculation and drawing widespread commentary from public figures like former U.S. President Donald Trump and author J.K. Rowling.

The public outcry, which falsely accused Khelif of being transgender or male, has brought attention to the broader issue of gender identity in sports. LGBTQ+ groups have expressed concern that such rhetoric could harm both their community and female athletes.

Khelif’s second win in Paris served as an emotional release for the 25-year-old athlete, who hails from a village in northwest Algeria. Overcome with emotion after her victory, Khelif knelt in the ring, tears streaming down her face as she acknowledged her supporters. Her family and fans back in Algeria watched with pride, with her mother, Irene, expressing admiration for her daughter’s courage in the face of adversity.

Hungary’s boxing association initially considered contesting the matchup with the International Olympic Committee but ultimately allowed the fight to proceed. Following the bout, Hungarian IOC member Balazs Furjes praised Hamori for her bravery, despite the challenging circumstances.
